A call overhead is a female honk
That alerts those below to the formation
Of the Canadian geese silhouetted
Against a cold, cloudless sky. A region
Of gray where they can fly in a perfect
V, announcing spring. Or victory,
As their black and white wings beat up and down
And long necks bob through a challenging wind,
On a long journey to find a new home
A shape etched high above, like the letter
On a chalkboard, they soar over buildings
And bare branches of trees, that beckon like
Crooked fingers, moving together as one.
Besides signaling a new season, the outline
Of prints in the snow soon to be gone, green
Leaves and grass beginning anew again,
They may be a symbol of what we want;
Somewhere to exist in complete harmony.
